The High Country was forever changed one year ago, but we're back and stronger than ever now!
When the weather forecasters began chattering about Hurricane Helene and its projected path, those of us here in the High Country (especially those who have lived here for many years!) collectively thought "psh, that could never hit up here like it does at the coast. We're in the mountains! Water flows downhill and people escape to higher ground, don't they?"
Oh, how wrong we were. In just a few short hours, Helene showed us just what several inches of rain could do to these mountains. In the words of one of our Customer Care team members, when you realize you're hearing the ancient boulders down in the river being swept away, it's bad.
But here we are, one year later, stronger than we've ever been in the wake of a storm that thought she could beat us, but had no idea who she was messing with.
So many have poured love, care, efforts, funds, and time into the entire Western North Carolina area to help speed recovery efforts.
In the wake of Hurricane Helene, we saw the true spirit of the High Country shine through. From Boone to Banner Elk and beyond, neighbors, first responders, volunteers, and generous donors came together to support one another in our region's time of need.
To everyone who offered help, whether through volunteering their time, gathering and bringing resources, or sending us heartfelt encouragement, we say a resounding THANK YOU. Your kindness has been instrumental in helping our beautiful mountain towns recover and rebuild with strength and resilience. The High Country community remains strong because of friends like you.
The best way to continue to help with the High Country's ongoing recovery is coming to visit and support our wonderful locally owned restaurants and shopping!
We especially encourage visitors to seek out and support the establishments who offered so much support on the ground to those in need. Local restaurants like Capone's Pizza, Dan'l Boone Inn, FARM Cafe, The Beacon, Betty's Biscuits, and more offered free food to impacted residents. Check out any of those amazing establishments for a delicious meal on your next visit!
Several of our wonderful homes had to undergo an extended recovery period after the storm. We are so pleased that they're back online and ready to welcome guests once again!
We encourage our guests to consider one of these lovely homes for your next visit!
